Richmond Naval Air Station Memorial ServiceSaturday, July 18th10 AMMiami Military Museum at Zoo Miami, 12450 SW 152 Street next to Gold Coast Railway MuseumHonoring the 72nd anniversary of the only Richmond Naval Air Station Combat Casualty of WW-II and only Lighter than Airship, Blimp, shot down in combat.We will be honoring the memory of Petty Officer Isadore Stessel, who died on July 18th, 1943 when his airship, K-74, was shot down by a German U-Boat off the coast of Key Largo while on patrol.According to the records, the airship came across an unknown radar contact, followed it and found the U-Boat.In the ensuring battle, the K-74 was shot down. The crew survived the crash, but PO Stessel was lost at sea and presumed killed in a shark attack.The Richmond Pine Rocklands are also the home to several remaining U-S Military and Homeland Security Facilities and the Martinez Reserve Base.It’s also home to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum and the Miami Military Museum, which was the headquarters for several other military projects.Much of it now is declared Endangered Habitat under the Endangered Species Act and is under limited Federal Protection following the discovery of more than a dozen endangered plants and animals there including the only known habitat of the Miami Tiger Beetle.It's our hope the Richmond Pine Rocklands and it’s history can be preserved for future generations to enjoy and honor.Al SunshinePresidentMiami Pine Rocklands Coalition, Inc.305 213 8129
